| Up and around after a Restless Night |
|
Eric and I got up around 7 am Kuwaiti time – after a restless night. We headed to the dining hall to get some breakfast, and again, we were impressed by the spread. Bacon, Eggs, French Toast, Sausage, Biscuits, even Breakfast Burritos… So, needless to say, we were able to find some food for breakfast. After that, we decided to check out the base a little bit. We found a jewelry store, an internet café, a Chinese restaurant, even a Hip Hop and Urban Wear Store. It was pretty neat. I forgot to mention showers and the bathrooms. Both are very clean. The showers and bathrooms are in air-conditioned trailers – away from the tents. Again – more than I expected. After the walk –we headed back to our tent to catch some sleep – since we hadn’t been able to sleep the night before. What was planned as a nap – turned into six hours of sleep. And let me tell you, when we walked out of the tent – it felt as if we’d stepped into a convection oven. I haven’t been able to confirm the high-temperature yet, but once when I checked – the ACTUAL outside temperature was 107 degrees F. So – HOT. There are water stations throughout the base – and it’s a good idea to drink water, according to the Military. However – at 107 degrees, it’s nearly impossible to pass up water without drinking it. Before I left, one of my friends said – “don’t worry, it’s a dry heat.” HAHA! Dry heat, humid heat, at 107 degrees, it really doesn’t matter what kind of heat it is, it’s just hot. We checked in – got our passports back with our travel visas, and now, we’re waiting on a flight to Baghdad where we’ll meet with the Army’s “Embed” team. They’re the people who’ll actually get us hooked up with the LA National Guard 165th. Before we can go, we’ll have to undergo some screening to make sure we’re able to safely enter Camp Taji. Eric and I are both very much ready to get started. |
